What We Help You Set Up
Going independent means clearing a stack of federal registrations before you can legally haul. We walk you through every one:
- USDOT NumberYour federal ID for safety and compliance tracking, filed through the FMCSA Unified Registration System.
- MC Authority (Operating Authority)Your license to operate as a for-hire carrier, filed on the FMCSA OP-1 forms.
- BOC-3 FilingA federal form naming a process agent in every state — required before your authority can activate.
- Insurance FilingCoordinating with your insurer so proof of coverage is filed directly with FMCSA. Your authority won't activate without it.
- UCR RegistrationThe annual Unified Carrier Registration every interstate carrier must complete.
- W-9 PreparationConfirms your legal business name and Tax ID so billing is clean once you're running.
You pay the FMCSA's filing fee — currently $300 — directly to FMCSA. We guide you through the paperwork; we don't mark up your filing.
From Application to First Load
- Apply. Submit your FMCSA application with our guidance, so it's right the first time.
- FMCSA processing. Federal review currently takes about 20–25 business days.
- Activation window. After approval, allow roughly 10 more days before your authority is active for hauling.
- We prepare while you wait. During that window we build your broker setup packets and dispatch profile, so nothing slows you down on day one.
- Your first load. The moment your authority activates, we start sourcing on your preferred lanes.

The Insurance You'll Need
Your authority won't activate until proof of insurance is on file with FMCSA. For general freight, the federal minimum is $750,000 in primary liability coverage. Most brokers also require cargo insurance — typically $100,000. Before you lock in a policy, we'll tell you what the brokers on your target lanes actually expect, so you're neither over- nor under-covered.
The Mistakes That Shut New Authorities Down
Most new authorities don't fail because freight dried up — they fail in the first year over avoidable paperwork: a lapsed insurance filing, a BOC-3 that wasn't updated, hours-of-service violations that pile up, or a compliance review nobody prepared for. A dispatcher isn't a compliance officer, but having your rate confirmations, paperwork, and load history organized from day one removes a whole layer of risk a new operator often doesn't see coming.
